GRANTLEY COLLEGE

Dear Parents and members of the Grantley College community,

The College had the unpleasant task of excluding a new student at the end of January.  The student was found to be in possession of an illegal substance.  A disciplinary hearing resulted in the removal of the student from the College on the recommendation of the Academic Principal.

In light of this incident Mrs McQueen requested permission from the Management Board to obtain the services of the SAPS Dog Unit to conduct a search on the property. This permission was granted at a board meeting on 23 February 2010 after lengthy debate and careful consideration of opinion from legal counsel and the school psychologist.

Between 09h00 and 11h00 today, 18 March 2010, the SAPS Dog Unit will have conducted a drug search at Grantley College

All staff and pupils will have been confined to their classrooms while the dog unit conducts the search of the entire College. They will have been accompanied by the Academic Principal, Mrs McQueen.  The chairperson of the board, Mrs Sheryl Damerell, also will have been present.

During the search, any person found in possession of any illegal substance will be taken to the office.  In the case of a student, the parents will be called and asked to come to the College. The student will not be questioned, and no interview will take place, until the parents arrive.

The Management Board regrets that such action is necessary, but deems it essential to ensuring the safety and security of all at the College.

We wish to emphasise the following:

1. The students of our school are educated about the dangers of substance abuse and peer pressure.

2. We have a Care Team who prepare talks for our students and counsel individual students.

3.  The Life Orientation curriculum from Grade 8-12 has a section on drug and alcohol dependence.

4.  The College will pursue a policy of zero-tolerance in respective of any illegal actions which pose a threat to the wellbeing of the staff and pupils of Grantley.

We will update you on the result of the search as soon as possible, and will apprise you of any developments as they occur. Any questions or concerns about this particular issue, or indeed any academic matters, must be addressed to the Academic Principal, Mrs McQueen, only.

On behalf of the management and board of Grantley College,

Mrs G. McQueen

Mrs S. Damerell

GRANTLEY COLLEGE

Dear Parents and members of the Grantley College community,

Earlier today you would have received a letter saying that a drug search was to be conducted by the SAPS Dog Unit at the College.

That search did occur.  It was conducted in an orderly and dignified manner.  The staff and  students all cooperated fully.

We are very pleased to report that no illegal substances were found, and that there were no incidents to report.

No student at any stage was made to feel uncomfortable or fearful. After the Unit had completed their task the students assembled in the hall whereupon they were de-briefed by Sergeant Pillay.

We have extended our thanks to the SAPS Dog Unit (Hillbrow) and their Labradors for the  professionalism and discretion they displayed so ably. We hope not to require their services soon, but have every confidence in them should they return.

We are especially grateful to the parents, staff and pupils for their assistance in this matter.  We are proud of the conduct of all of you, our Grantley family, in this process.

We are also grateful for the many calls and mails we received from parents, some to offer  support and others to share views or concerns. If there are any further comments or questions, please contact Mrs McQueen.  We welcome your feedback.

On behalf of the management and board of Grantley College,

Mrs G. McQueen

Mrs S. Damerell

DANGERS OF HOOKAH SMOKING

Hookah smoking is currently a growing trend and hookah bars are beginning to turn up all over the country.  It has been a common  rumour that hookah smoking is safer than cigarettes.  However, as new studies are being done, we are now beginning to realize the true dangers of hookah smoking.

Function

The hookah, also referred to as the water pipe, is a four-part device consisting of a base or smoke chamber that contains water, a bowl for the tobacco and the heat source, a pipe and a hose. As smoke is drawn from the hose it creates a pressure difference that pushes the air past the heat source and heats the tobacco. The smoke is then pulled through the water and into the smoke chamber. Now the smoker can inhale it in great volume.

Significance

In 2004, reported there were between 200 and 300 new hookah cafes in the country since 1999. Most of these cafes are located near colleges. The water pipe has become a rapidly growing trend among college students, and has health experts and doctors highly concerned. With the common  misconception that hookah smoking is safer for you, more young adults are beginning to take up the habit free of guilt.

Misconceptions

One of the oldest myths surrounding the hookah came from Turkey, where it originated, claiming that the water filters out the chemicals and toxins in the tobacco and allows the smoker to enjoy the full  flavour of the tobacco. It is another common misconception that hookah smoking isn't addictive and therefore is gaining popularity at an alarming rate.

Facts

What makes hookah smoking so much worse for you than cigarettes is that hookah smokers tend to inhale longer, and take in much more volume than a cigarette smoker. New studies show that one hookah session is the equivalent to smoking about 100 cigarettes. It has been long believed that the hookah filters out the toxins and makes the tobacco safer, which simply isn't true. While is agreed by users and  researchers alike that the nicotine becomes filtered as it goes through the pipe, scientists are now saying that the amount of filtration is minimal and enough passes through to become addicted.

Warning

New studies are showing that hookah smoking releases over 8 percent more carbon monoxide than  regular cigarette smoking, which is a large contributor to cardiac disease. Other serious effects include emphysema, bronchitis, heart disease and various types of cancer. Not only are there the same dangers that come with cigarette smoking, but several new ones that come from the charcoal in a heating element which causes more carbon monoxide, and introduces new harmful chemicals.

No Less Dangerous

According to a report by the American Lung Association, hookah use has many of the same risks as cigarette smoking, like carbon monoxide, tar and nicotine, which can lead to cancer and emphysema. There is a misconception that the water in the hookah filters out most of these harmful elements.

Spreading Disease

Many users speed the process of passing the hookah by sharing mouthpieces. This increases the chance for the spread of diseases like herpes, mononucleosis and  tuberculosis.

STUDY ABOUT HOOKAH SMOKING

Researchers indicate that hookah smoking can be even more harmful to health than cigarette smoking.

Hookah smoke has a higher level of heavy  metals and carbon monoxide than cigarette smoke, because of the charcoal which is burned on top of the tobacco mixture.

45 minutes of hookah smoking equivalent to smoking 50 tobacco cigarettes.

It was found that smoking hookah for 45 minutes means consuming tar equivalent in 20 tobacco cigarettes.

The amount of cellular chromosomal damage produced inside the mouth in hookah smoking is the same as that seen in cigarette smoking.

The WHO advisory note states that water-pipe smokers inhale more smoke resulting in more exposure to  cancer causing chemicals and hazardous gases such as carbon monoxide. Water-pipe smokers and secondhand smokers are at risk for the same kinds of diseases as are caused by cigarette smoking, including cancer, heart disease, respiratory disease and adverse effects during pregnancy.

SOCCER_FEVER

Dear Parents

As a school, Grantley College has decided to become involved in the Fifa  Soccer World Cup. Our aim is to show loyalty to South Africa as well as to get behind  the Bafana Bafana soccer team. We are also raising funds towards our own soccer field which we are planning to open with a big bash on the 15th May 2010.

We are therefore encouraging all the students to buy a South African soccer t-shirt from the school.  They will be able to wear these on Fridays to school. The teachers have already started the trend. No other soccer shirt will be allowed. The soccer shirt will be on sale daily, in the mornings, from Mrs Duif at R120.00 each.  Should you wish to order for family and friends as well, feel free to do so.

Ladies shirts range from small to X large  available in green, and the mens shirts are available from small to XX large in white and green.  These shirts are Fifa approved.

More details regarding the opening on the 15th May will follow.

Please support our endeavour as well as our fund-raising venture.

As we are working as a cash-free environment, please fill in the attached order form below to place the cost of the t-shirts on your account.
